Gas Flaring, Birch Bay Oil Refinery

Gas Flaring, Birch Bay Oil Refinery

The burning of natural gas lights up the sky at the British-Petroleum (BP) Cherry Point oil refinery. This type of gas flare accounts for 0.5% of greenhouse gas emissions. Most of the world's gas flaring occurs in the Niger River Delta, and is associated with acid rain, respiratory problems, and cancer. This is one of the motivations for MEND, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, which has been sabotaging oil operations in the delta and have reduced oil exports by 40%.
